Curriculum

Sonlight Child Development Center prides itself in the quality of its staff. We employ well educated, experienced, enthusiastic teachers. Our multiple, bright, airy classrooms are well supplied with age and developmentally appropriate learning equipment and culturally diverse materials.

“Learning through Play in a Nurturing Environment” is Sonlight’s philosophy. Our teacher’s main objective is to create a learning environment that encourages children to “learn through play.”  Our classrooms are center based.  Center areas include: art, writing, reading, story/music, dramatic play, block, math, science/sensory, and more… Center time is mostly child directed.  The teachers are present to supervise, model and encourage social interaction with the children.

Sonlight’s curriculum is designed to meet the early childhood program standards as outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Our curriculum for children two through five years of age uses a combination of center based learning and free play with small and large group (circle time) learning.  Small and large group time is more teacher-directed, while providing for much interaction from the children.  Even our infants are ready for group time on a very limited basis.  They can come together for a short story, song, or nursery rhyme.

All of Sonlight’s teachers write individualized, theme-based lesson plans that are posted weekly on the parent boards.  Lesson plans consist of small and large motor activities, letter and number identification, counting, and lots more!  Lesson plans focus on building self-esteem and social growth.  The development of each child is enriched by a variety of theme-based activities.
